Allergen Avoidance is often preferable to Treatment
Many forms of contact dermatitis can be treated by medications but wouldn't it be better to try and prevent you coming into contact with the allergens in the first place?
This is often not as easy as it sounds. Daily avoidance of newsprint, black leather and latex can be difficult to say the least as they are so much a part of our everyday lives.
To avoid contact with the irritating substances that cause this type of dermatitis, Espère Healthcare is proud to introduce a patented innovation in Microair Barrier gloves and socks.
These are made from a revolutionary fabric which:
- blocks allergens and irritants;
- is impermeable to liquids, ions and gases;
- breathes to allow the transmission of water vapour.
Microair® Barrier Fabric has been designed and patented by Alpretec, the inventors of DermaSilk Therapeutic Clothing. It prevents allergens/irritants from getting into contact with the skin but still lets it breathe.
This is a tri-layered fabric, made of a knitted polyester microfibre in layers 1 & 3. T he internal layer is a micro porous membrane (2) which allows the passage of water vapour and sweat whilst remaining waterproof, blocking the passeage of allergens.. The result is a fabric that will hold back a column of water over 2 metres high without leaking whilst having the ability to steam up a pair of spectacles held over a covered hot coffee!
Available as Gloves and Socks
Microair Barrier Socks and gloves have a number of applications.
For those people working in industries that require the use of industrial safety boots there is always a risk of potentially harmful chemicals leaching from the leather, through the socks and onto the feet of the wearer. Toxins such as chromates and nickel can cause significant damage to the skin of the feet which can result in time off work and reduced productivity.
The use of Microair Barrier socks will allow the feet to breathe and remain cool but any chemicals that accumulate in the boot will not pass through the barrier sock to the feet.
This isn’t always an industrial problem as many people find that they are sensitive to the dyes and adhesives used in modern footwear.
Microair Barrier gloves and socks have been designed for use respectively under working gloves and under ordinary socks.
The socks are completely waterproof. All the seams are protected by a special tape which is welded over the seam joint to protect it.
Whilst the fabric in the gloves is waterproof their conventional construction means that the seams cannot be fully waterproofed. However, they will ensure that the vast majority of contact allergens are prevented from gaining access to the skin.
Gloves and socks may be washed at 60°-90°C. It is also possible to wash them in an autoclave and dry them to hospital standards.
The use of DermaSilk® in addition to the Microair Barrier products can help in the overall management of Contact Dermatitis as the pure fibroin, combined with the permanent antimicrobial activity the therapeutic clothing:
- quickly reduces itching and inflammation;
- prevents excessive moisture from remaining on the skin;
- controls bacterial, fungal and yeast superinfections;
- promotes the healing of lesions and regeneration of the skin.
The following clinical studies confirm the efficacy of this fabric in dealing with Contact Dermatitis.
- Efficacy of a new barrier glove in the treatment of chronic hand eczema
(Kinaciyan T. et al., Poster Presentation EAACI Congress, Warsaw, 6-10 June 2009);
- “Allergic contact dermatitis of the feet: therapeutic efficacy of barrier socks”
(Corazza M. et al. Poster presentation, SIDAPA Congress, Cervia, 22-24 October 2009);
- Use of new “Barrier socks” in contact allergic dermatitis” CASE REPORT
(Borghesan F. and Bellotti).
- 1) Can I combine Microair Barrier products with pharmacological therapies?
Yes. There is no kind of contra-indication in the use of pharmacological therapies with Microair Barrier products.
- 2) Is it necessary to use creams as well as Microair Barrier gloves or socks?
It isn’t necessary to use creams with Microair Barrier products, unless they have been prescribed by your doctor. In this case, you must ensure that the creams are completely absorbed prior to putting on the Barrier product.
- 3) Does Microair Barrier fabric contain or release cortisone or other drugs?
No, the fabric does not release any kind of substance, it creates a barrier between the skin and the allergens or irritating substances.
- 4) Can I use Microair Barrier gloves/socks without wearing working gloves/ordinary socks on top?
The use of Microair Barrier products combined with working gloves/ordinary socks is suggested to prolong the life of the product (for example, wearing the socks in direct contact with shoes could damage the fabric).
- 5) Can I use Microair Barrier gloves in direct contact with water?
No, it isn’t possible to use Microair Barrier gloves in contact with water. The fabric that they are made of is waterproof, but unlike the socks, the seams, designed to ensure an excellent fit of the product, are not.
- 6) Why is it recommended to use these items with DermaSilk products?
The use of Microair Barrier products combined with DermaSilk® gloves or under-socks is recommended because the latter, worn in direct contact with the skin, are aids in the treatment of Contact Dermatitis and Chronic Eczema. They help restore the barrier of the skin and control inflammation and any super-infections. This has been demonstrated in clinical trials to be an effective combination.
You've told us......
"These socks have been a lifesaver. I hardly ever worry now about infection and wear these socks most days especially when going out. i only have to apply steroids about twice a week and emollients every other day. This is such a dramatic change from having to apply these emollient creams almost on an hourly basis. This is a teriffic product. My husband and I are thrilled about the healing effect these socks have had... I have spent an enormous sum of money in recent years on prescriptions and other items to try to do what wearing these socks has done in such a short space of time. They wash really well and come up like new every time." J.G. - Chromate allergic.
"Before getting the socks i used a variety of creams and moisturisers like Doublebase to the most potent being the steroid cream Dermovate. They never really touched the surface and the condition always returned. Since buying your socks a year ago, I've had a couple of very minimum attacks which unlike before are a bit of an itch and flaky skin (previously my skin broke, bled and made walking difficult). I normally now treat this with Dermovate once a day for a couple of days. I still moisturise my feet regularly but the socks have stopped any other major outbreak." B.C. - Acid Yellow 36 Dye allergic.
"...whenever I wore shoes with rubber in them...I came out in eczemaon the soles of my feet that would crack, get infected and make even walking around the house a bit of a nightmare! With my hands I found it was the steering wheel of my car...The doctors told me the only cure was to avoid all rubber, however it's just not possible as it's everywhere! I've had to give up football, cricket and running due to footwear and glove issues. I wear the socks every day when i'm wearing shoes...my feet have almost completely returned to normal. I can wear trainers again and most shoes...and I wear my gloves every time I'm driving. I can't emphasise enough what these products have done for me and I use them every day, without them I'd go back to cracked and infected feet and hands. They're obviously not a cure but without doubt they're the best treatment / preventative measure out there. M.H. - rubber accelerant allergic.
"The Micro air barrier socks are brilliant and allow me to wear shoes that would otherwise cause severe contact dermatitis....these products are truly transformational. I do not require any medication when I use the socks whereas previous needed emollients and steroid creams. " Dr F.S. PTBP (shoe glue) allergic
